How Age Calculation Works
Understanding the mathematics behind precise age determination
Calculating age might seem straightforward, but getting an exact result in years, months, and days requires careful consideration of varying month lengths (28-31 days) and leap years. Simply subtracting the birth year from the current year doesn't account for whether the birthday has occurred yet this year.
Our age calculator uses the chronological age method, which is the most widely accepted approach. It counts complete years, then remaining complete months, and finally remaining days. This is the same method used by governments, healthcare systems, and legal institutions worldwide.
Chronological Age
Your actual age based on the calendar, counting from your date of birth. This is what most people mean when they say "age" and is used for legal, medical, and official purposes.
Age Counting Systems
Different cultures count age differently. In East Asian age reckoning, a baby is considered 1 year old at birth. In Western countries, age starts at 0 and increments on each birthday.
Leap Year Handling
Leap years add an extra day (Feb 29) every 4 years (with century exceptions). Our calculator properly accounts for leap years when calculating your exact age in days.
