How to use the formatter
- Choose the default country. It is used for numbers written without a country code, such as
0555 12 34 56. - Paste your numbers, one per line. Spaces, dashes, dots and brackets are fine.
- Read the results. Valid numbers are converted to E.164, invalid ones are flagged, and repeats are marked as duplicates.
- Click Copy all for the clean E.164 list, or CSV for every row with its country, type and status.
What E.164 is
E.164 is the international standard format for phone numbers: a plus sign, the country code and the national number, with no spaces or punctuation, up to 15 digits in total.
| Written as | Country | E.164 |
|---|---|---|
| 0555 12 34 56 | Algeria | +213555123456 |
| 06 12 34 56 78 | France | +33612345678 |
| (213) 373-4253 | United States | +12133734253 |
| 050 123 4567 | United Arab Emirates | +971501234567 |
Almost every messaging API, including SMS providers, verification services and WhatsApp, expects numbers in this format. Storing numbers in E.164 also makes duplicates easy to find, because the same number can only be written one way.
How validation works
The formatter uses the numbering plans from Google's libphonenumber project, through the libphonenumber-js library. For each country it knows how long a number must be, which prefixes exist, and which ranges belong to mobile phones, landlines, toll-free and premium-rate numbers.
A number marked valid has the right length and a prefix that is in use. That does not prove the number is connected or on WhatsApp. Only sending a message, or a verification code, proves that.
Tips for cleaner contact lists
- Store numbers in E.164 from the start. Format on input in your forms, and keep the country the user selected.
- Remove landlines before an SMS campaign. Most landlines cannot receive text messages, and they are never on WhatsApp.
- Watch for premium-rate and toll-free numbers. They rarely belong in a customer list, and premium-rate numbers are a common sign of fraud on sign-up forms.
- Deduplicate before you send. Duplicates mean the same person gets your message twice, which is the quickest way to be reported as spam.
Frequently asked questions
What is the correct format for international phone numbers?
E.164: a plus sign, the country code and the national number with no spaces, for example +213555123456. The leading zero of the national number is dropped.
How do I convert a list of phone numbers to E.164?
Paste the list into the formatter, choose the country for numbers without a country code, and copy the E.164 column or download the CSV.
Why is my number marked invalid?
It has the wrong number of digits for its country, uses a prefix that is not allocated, or was read with the wrong default country. Check the country, and add the country code if the number is from abroad.
Can it tell whether a number is on WhatsApp?
No. Being on WhatsApp is not part of the numbering plan. A valid mobile number is the best indication without sending a message.
Are my numbers uploaded anywhere?
No. Formatting and validation run in your browser, so your list never leaves your device.
