469 words ready

One phone, no talking, and a clock that does not care how bad your elephant is.

How to play

  1. Choose your categories, how hard the words are, the seconds per turn and the number of rounds.
  2. Set the number of teams. Tap Names if you want to name them.
  3. Pass the phone to the first team. One player becomes the actor and taps to see the word.
  4. Act it out with no talking, no sounds and no pointing at things in the room.
  5. Tap Got it when your team says the word, or Pass to skip to the next one. Only Got it scores.
  6. When time runs out, say whether the team got the last word in time. The scores appear, and the phone moves on.

The next word stays hidden until the next actor asks for it, so the phone can pass through as many hands as it likes on the way.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play charades online?

You don't need a set of cards. Open this page on one phone, set up your teams, and pass the phone around. The actor sees the word, and everyone else guesses. For a video call, the actor can open the page on their own phone and play with the camera on.

Is this a charades generator?

Yes. Each word is picked at random from the categories and difficulty you chose, and no word comes back until you have been through them all.

What are good charades words for kids?

Choose Easy and start with Animals, Food or Actions. Cat, banana and brushing your teeth are simple to act and quick to guess. Younger kids often do best with Feelings too, since their faces do most of the work.

What are good charades words for a family?

Try Mixed with every category on, so grown-ups and kids all get something they can act. Family life is a favorite, because everyone has lived through waiting for the bathroom and losing one sock.

Can I play charades with a timer?

Yes, that is how this game works. Choose 30, 45, 60, 90 or 120 seconds per turn. The clock turns red for the last 10 seconds. If someone comes to the door, tap Pause, and the word hides until you resume.

How many people do you need?

Three or four is enough for two small teams, and you can have up to six teams. With only three people, take turns being the actor and let the other two guess together.

What if my team can't get a word?

Tap Pass. It costs nothing but time, and the word shows up on the summary at the end of the turn so everyone can groan about it.

Are the words family-friendly?

Yes. Every prompt is written to be fine in a family living room, with nothing rude, scary or dangerous to act out.

Does the page save our team names?

No. Names and scores stay in your browser, and they are gone when you close the page.

We are better at messages than miming.

Oxtro gives businesses a shared WhatsApp inbox, campaigns and a messaging API on a number they already own. This game is what we made for the times when nobody should be typing at all.
