Word Guess
Six tries. Five letters. One word, the same for everyone today. Can you find it before your friends do?
How to play
- Type any five-letter word, on the screen or on your keyboard, and press Enter.
- A green square with a tick means the letter is in the word, in this exact spot.
- A yellow dotted circle means the letter is in the word, but somewhere else.
- A grey dashed tile, crossed through, means the letter is not in the word, or that there are no more copies of it.
- Use those clues on your next guess. You have six tries to find the word.
Today is one word for everyone, and it changes at midnight UTC. It counts toward your streak. Practice gives you a new word whenever you like, as many as you like, and doesn't touch your stats.
How to get better at Word Guess
The answers stay secret, but these habits will help on any day. They work in practice mode too.
Your first guess
- Pick a word with five different letters, so no guess is wasted on a repeat.
- Start with plenty of vowels. Audio, arise and raise all test three or more.
- Or go for common consonants with stare or least. Both try s, t and e, which turn up in many words.
- Stick with one opener for a week. You will learn what its results usually mean.
Your second guess
- Got almost nothing back? Use five fresh letters instead of building on one weak clue.
- A letter in the wrong spot is a real clue. Move it somewhere new on the next guess.
- Test o, u, n, d or l if your opener skipped them.
- You do not have to use every clue yet. A word that tests new letters often tells you more.
Reading the clues
- A tick means the letter is in the right spot. It stays there for the rest of the game.
- A circle means the letter is in the word, but not in that spot. Rule that spot out for it.
- A crossed-out tile means the letter is not in the word, or that the word holds no more copies of it.
- Check the keyboard before you guess. It shows the best result you have for every letter.
Double letters
- Run out of ideas? The answer may repeat a letter. Words often double e, o, l, s or t.
- If you guess the same letter twice and only one copy is marked, the word has just one of it.
- If both copies are marked, the word has at least two. Keep looking for the right spots.
When you are stuck
- Think about common endings, such as -er, -ly, -ch and -ed, and common starts, such as sh-, st- and br-.
- Say the pattern out loud with a blank for each gap. Your ear may find a word your eye missed.
- With several words still possible, guess one that splits them, even if it cannot be the answer.
- Stuck on today's word? Step away and come back. You have until midnight UTC, and your tries are saved.
Frequently asked questions
What is the word guess game?
It is a free 5 letter word game in your browser. You guess a hidden word, and each guess shows which letters are in the right spot, which are in the wrong spot, and which are not in the word at all. You have six tries.
Is there a new word every day?
Yes. This is a daily word game: there is one word per day, the same for everyone in the world, and it changes at midnight UTC. Your tries are saved, so you can close the page and finish later.
Can I play more than once a day?
The daily word is one game a day, but Practice has no limit. Each practice word is new until you have seen them all, and practice games don't change your streak.
Why does it say "not in word list"?
The game only takes real words from its list, so you can't test letters with a made-up word. A guess it refuses doesn't cost you a try. The list leaves out some real words on purpose, because this game is made for all ages. Try another word.
What happens if a letter appears twice?
A letter is only marked as often as the word holds it. If you guess two copies of a letter and the word has one, one copy is marked and the other is crossed through. An exact match always gets its mark first.
How does sharing work?
When you finish, tap Share or Copy result. You send a grid of colored squares that shows how your game went, without a single letter, so nobody gets spoiled.
Where is my streak saved?
In this browser, on this device, using local storage. We have no account or server for it, so clearing your browser data resets it, and another phone starts from zero.
Where do the words come from?
We wrote the list of answers ourselves, using common words that are fine for all ages. The longer list of accepted guesses is a filtered version of SCOWL, by Kevin Atkinson.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
It is free, with no account and no download. It works on phones, tablets and computers.
